How to Choose the Right ABA Therapy Providers for Your Child

March 29, 2025

Credentials and Supervision

Ensure the provider employs Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) who oversee treatment. Direct therapy should be delivered by Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) or supervised staff. Ask about the BCBA-to-client ratio and how much direct supervision each therapist receives. Quality providers maintain supervision ratios that meet or exceed BACB requirements. Verify that all staff credentials are current through the BACB registry.

Assessment and Individualization

A quality provider begins with a comprehensive assessment before starting therapy. Ask what assessment tools they use (VB-MAPP, ABLLS-R, Vineland, etc.). Treatment plans should be individualized with specific, measurable goals based on the assessment results. Be cautious of providers who use a one-size-fits-all approach or who promise specific outcomes before assessing your child.

Data-Driven Decision Making

ABA is a data-driven science. Providers should collect data during every session, analyze it regularly, and make treatment decisions based on the data. Ask how often treatment plans are reviewed and updated. Quality providers share data and progress reports with families regularly. If a provider cannot show you data demonstrating your child’s progress, that is a concern.

Family Involvement

The best ABA providers actively involve families in treatment. This includes parent training, regular communication about progress and challenges, and collaboration on goal-setting. You should feel welcome to observe sessions and ask questions. Providers who discourage parent involvement or operate as a “black box” are not following best practices.

Red Flags to Watch For

Avoid providers who guarantee specific outcomes, refuse to share data, use aversive or punitive techniques, have high staff turnover, do not involve families, or pressure you into more hours than your child needs. Trust your instincts; if something feels wrong, it may be. Treetop ABA Therapy welcomes questions and transparency, providing families with regular progress updates and meaningful involvement in their child’s treatment.
